📋Key knowledge — Reproduction

Key facts & rules

  • Sexual reproduction: fusion of male and female gametes → genetic variation.
  • Asexual reproduction: mitosis → genetically identical offspring (clones).
  • Insect-pollinated flowers: large petals, scent, nectar, sticky pollen, sticky stigma.
  • Wind-pollinated flowers: small petals, no scent, large feathery stigma, light/smooth pollen.
  • After fertilisation in plants: ovule → seed; ovary wall → fruit.
  • Conditions for germination: water, oxygen, warmth (not light).
  • Human male gamete: sperm (haploid, mobile); female: egg/ovum (haploid, large, stationary).
  • Menstrual cycle: ~28 days; ovulation at day ~14; FSH stimulates follicle; LH triggers ovulation; oestrogen rebuilds uterine lining; progesterone maintains lining.
