Formulas & equations

  • Speed = distance ÷ time
  • Acceleration = change in velocity ÷ time = (v − u) ÷ t
  • v = u + at
  • s = ut + ½at²
  • v² = u² + 2as
  • s = ½(u + v)t

Key facts & rules

  • Distance-time graph: gradient = speed. Horizontal line = stationary. Curved = acceleration.
  • Velocity-time graph: gradient = acceleration. Area under graph = distance travelled.
  • Scalar: magnitude only (speed, distance, mass, temperature, time).
  • Vector: magnitude AND direction (velocity, displacement, acceleration, force, momentum).
  • Free fall: acceleration due to gravity g ≈ 10 m/s² (or 9.8 m/s²).
  • Uniform acceleration: constant change in velocity per second.
