Formulas & equations

  • Work done = force × distance in direction of force (W = Fd, unit: J)
  • Kinetic energy = ½mv²
  • Gravitational PE = mgh
  • Power = work done ÷ time = energy transferred ÷ time (P = W/t, unit: W)
  • Efficiency = useful energy output ÷ total energy input (× 100 for %)
  • Electrical energy = power × time (E = Pt)

  • Conservation of energy: energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred or converted.
  • All energy eventually becomes thermal energy (heat).
  • 1 kWh (kilowatt-hour) = 3.6 × 10⁶ J.
