Formulas & equations

  • Area of triangle = ½ × base × height = ½ab sin C
  • Area of circle = πr²
  • Circumference = 2πr = πd
  • Area of trapezium = ½(a+b)h
  • Volume of prism = cross-section area × length
  • Volume of cylinder = πr²h
  • Volume of cone = ⅓πr²h
  • Volume of sphere = (4/3)πr³
  • Volume of pyramid = ⅓ × base area × height
  • Curved surface area of cone = πrl (l = slant height)
  • Surface area of sphere = 4πr²

Key facts & rules

  • For composite shapes: split into simple shapes, calculate each area/volume separately, then add (or subtract for holes).
  • Units: 1 m² = 10 000 cm²; 1 m³ = 1 000 000 cm³.
  • Slant height of cone: l = √(r² + h²).
